Hi all, I am a new PIP owner. I was trying to find the setting of the EV to HV cut-off speed. The CNET review was saying it is 62 mile, but I am it is the default. I try to find it in manual, but I do not see any info. If you know the page no in the manual, please tell me. Thanks in advance! Billy
It's roughly 62 mph, but if you are not on an incline and gentle on the gas pedal, you can go several mph over this.
If you go over 62 mph in EV mode, you don't get to the HV mode. You'll be in EV-Boost mode where the battery will continue to deplete while working together with the ICE. You'll have to hit the EV/HV toggle to enter the HV mode where the battery charge level would be maintained.
If you are in EV mode, the engine will fire up at 100 km/h (62.1 mph). However, you will continue to draw electricity at a higher rate than what you'd get from HV mode. The result is much higher MPG than usual. You can see that in the video below. We've coined this EV-BOOST mode. It will continue until you slow back down to automatically re-enter EV mode or run out of electricity (which then becomes HV mode). That EV/HV toggle button allows you to specify the modes as well, since sometimes you want to fire up the engine even when driving slower. For me, that's pretty much a necessity during the winter here in Minnesota. Using it for brief HV driving, you can then stay warm even while driving in EV mode.
Two things to add to what's already been said: -with very gentle acceleration, I've been able to get to 64 mph in pure EV mode -it is possible to be in pure EV mode even above these speeds if the engine has already warmed up and you're going at a slight (or not so slight) downhill. Earlier today, I was doing 72 mph with no engine input.
It may not show an arrow on the screen but ICE should be spinning at around 1,000 rpm once you go over 62 mph.
As I understand it, there are mechanical consideration in the Power Split Device that connects the ICE, motor/generators, and wheels, that require the ICE to be spinning at least a little bit at speeds above 100 kmh. It may be providing very little power compared to the electric motors (the "EV-Boost" mode described above), but it has to be spinning.
Yup, MG1 would be spinning 9,500 rpm at 62 mph. It is rated for 10,000 rpm (65 mph) so I guess there is a safety limit. If the ICE spins at 1,000 rpm, MG1 speed drops down to 5,900 rpm (at 62 mph).
We know it is possible with software because the limit for a regular Prius is 45 mph. To go higher speed, the PSD ratio needs to change. That would like result in lower MPG as we've seen in C-Max Energi.
what benefit would you get at speeds faster than 62 mph? at 62 mph your EV would be 6.2 miles at best
If you switch to the HV mode, the limit will be 45 mph. Enter the EV mode and it'll be 62 mph again. I guess it is selectable that way.
