VW orders batteries
Source: Tesla: VW Just Ordered $48 Billion in Electric Car Batteries | Fortune
VW (VLKAY, -1.20%) has awarded battery-purchasing contracts worth 40 billion euros ($48 billion), double from just a few weeks ago. The deals take the German manufacturer within striking distance of a sought-for 50 billion-euro total. By 2025, VW plans to sell as many as 3 million all-electric cars per year, Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess told investors Thursday at the annual shareholder meeting in Berlin.
Most of the article read like something written by a Tesla stock shorter with a lot of gratuitous comments about Tesla.

Hey, Saab lovers! The 9-3 is back, and it's electric
It looks the same, but is being built in China with an electric powertrain, and sold under the NEVS brand.
NEVS is developing second- and third-generation electric powertrains with its partners in China, one of which is Chinese ridesharing service DiDi.
DiDi hopes to have more than 1 million electric cars on its platform by 2020. NEVS and DiDi are also working together on fully autonomous cars.

Making sense of electric car window stickers: What it all means
Trying to compare EVs with gasoline or diesel vehicles isn't easy, and the current window sticker doesn't help

While in principle MPGe is a good way of conveying relative efficiency, I'm not sure that it's actually meaningful to consumers, nor is energy efficiency in general for plug-in vehicles," said Sam Abuelsamid, senior analyst at Navigant Research. "Much as most consumers focus on what their monthly payment is going to be, for EVs, I think they are mostly just interested in the electric range and, in the case of PHEVs, the gas/diesel efficiency."
. . .

Tesla building factory in Shanghai
Wall Street Journal sources claim that Tesla has a deal to build a factory in Shanghai's free trade zone. Tesla would still have to pay the 25 percent import duty, but it would retain full control and could likely offset the tariff with lower production and shipping costs.

Seminal paper on optically mapped, 3d space
The success of autonomous driving is limited by the sensors, typically optically based, that map what is seen in front of the car. Both distance, direction, and the calculated relative velocities are critical to guiding a car to avoid other moving and stationary objects. So this paper describes an improved approach:
http://web.media.mit.edu/~achoo/beat/Kadambi_beat_lowres.pdf
Radar works by timing a reflected signal but the problem is sensor time resolution, they are too slow to achieve more than centimeter resolution. This paper outlines how to 'heterodyne' the transmitted and reflected light to achieve millimeter resolution. Better still, it appears to mitigate the fog problem.
There is a big gap between lab and product but the math and physics laid out here is the roadmap to improved, autonomous driving sensors (and others.) Ones that may not require mechanical sweeping of the field.
