I added fuel to my 05 Prius today and had a significant fuel spill. I had the nozzle set at the slowest setting based on a comment I had read on PriusChat about using the slow fill to insure filling the bladder completely. Apparently at the slow fill rate there was insufficient back pressure to shut of the nozzle and I ended up wil gaslone shooting our of the vent holes on the nozzle. Then when I removed the nozzle fuel poured back out of the car.
I have been working on the best way to get as much fuel in the tank as possible. I had gotten a burp back as you did, pumping slow after 1st kickoff. I can definely get 1 gallon, but sometimes more. When I got the burp-back, I hadn't pulled out the nozzle after about 1/4 gal at a time from the 1st gallon after 1st clickoff. I think we need to 'burp' the baby by pulling out the nozzle often after click-off, at least after the 1st gallon. Otherwise the baby will throw up from too much gas in her tummy.
This is why I use the fastest pump setting that doesn't result in an immediate shut-off. One shut-off failure erases the good done by hundreds of miles of low-emissions driving.
The "olde fueling question..." Keeps coming up... I've tried many techniques, but with the moderate temperatures (usually) in Dallas, I've found setting the pump flow at HIGH seems to work well for me. I do "burp" the tank when the nozzle shuts off (by removing the nozzle, then replacing it), but rarely get more than ½ gallon in after that. I've had one "spit up" incident at a discount station and suspect their pump equipment was not well maintained or improperly set.
