I have a 2013 Prius with 418k miles on it. I get gas at multiple locations & stations in Iowa (USA). Over the last six months it has gotten more and more difficult to fill up (which I do daily). It seems the fuel will not go into the tank as fast as it should so it backs up to the nozzle and shut off the pump. On the slowest setting, I rarely can get more than a gallon in before it shuts off. I then stand there and try to find the sweet spot with the pump handle where the gas trickles in and goes into the tank at the same rate. Is there a filter that needs changed? What else could be causing such a slow fill up rate? I'm really not looking forward to winter. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
418k miles! Is that a record for a third generation? What major repairs has it required? When this filling problem occurs, are you using a pump with a vapor-recovery nozzle (as typically required in major urban areas)?
I met a courier out this way who had 470k on his 2015 before it got side swiped by a big rig. He ended up buying a 2017 and piling up the miles on it. Staying in touch with him as he might get us the fastest answer on the Gen4 egr change data check.
You might want to check the fill neck and vent hose for any problems. If you are in an area where they salt the roads you may have a corroded vent fill neck that’s open to the air. However, this would probably set a EVP code and turn on the MIL. Also make sure the lip on the fuel filler isn’t all rusty. Again, any of these scenarios would most likely turn on the MIL but it’s worth a look.
2 Pups, you can try and search the site for a post I had from back in 2017. Evaporative System Codes P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402, P2419 In this case I was getting CEL but also very difficult to fill the vehicle. I would suspect you have a restricted filter in the evap canister possibly due to dust there on the dirt roads in Iowa. Nothing in the canister is serviceable according to Toyota, but you can take everything apart once you get to the canister. If I can help let me know.
2 pups Did you ever figure out what to do on your filling problem? Ran across your question as I was doing a search for our car with the same problem. We have a 2014, and live in NW Iowa Thanks
