About a month ago I bought some air filter material for .59. I cut 2 pieces for both Air Cabin and Engine. I checked them both and the dust/ dirt stoppage seems to be proportional to the short period of operation. NO discernable change in either air conditioning system or Engine performance. Gas milrage the same. 54MPG trip and 44MPG in Suburbia. Car has about 30,000 miles on it (2005) Whole replacement was so simple and fast that I think I'll just incorporate with my 5000 mile oil changes and tire rotations.

What sort of material? Where did you get it? What's it rated for?

As it stands, your post is a non-message. "I did something."

Bill's right. Air filter material is rated by the micron size of particle that can pass through it.
Cabin filter is one thing, but I wouldn't mess with the engine air filter. That would most certainly void the warranty.

I agree with the above two comments on my new filtering systems. Isn't it possible that we are getting over technical. Looking at micron size, volume of air passing thru filter material, type of material etc. If this information was readily available, one could consider these things. When searching for an ordinary AC filter for a home unit, one is confronted with a variety of types, prices, sizes. If I then had to search for proper micron size, I might never purchase a filter. Now if the car was choking, for lack of air, or smells or dust was passing thru the cabin, then I would be very concerned, and investigate. Now, what is the micron size of the cabin filter for the Prius and will it stop sub atomic particles?

Just a suggestion, you might what to stick with OEM for the engine air filter. Sounds like the filter you are using did not provide any technical spec. Since the engine air filter is critical to the operation of the ICE (by removing dust and allowing enough air thru), you should not just use any filter material. I'm sure Toyota chooses the filter base on some kind of calculation or spec requirement.

For the cabin filter, you can use whatever you want if you are comfortable with it.
