My wife and recently returned from a 3899.3 mile (6275.3 km) road trip from Oklahoma to Fargo, ND, then on to Glacier National Park (NW Montana)/ Waterton Lakes NP (Southern Alberta, Canada) and home again. Driving was mostly highway/interstate travel with speed limits up to 85 MPH (136.8 kph). I stayed at or just under the speed limits at all times while on the open highways/interstates. We used a total of 99.39 gallons (376.2 liters) of gasoline on the trip. As a result we averaged 39.23 MPG (16.68 km/l) for the trip. Bottom line is I am very happy with that considering we came from a 2006 Dodge Caravan the got 20-22 MPG on the open road. Note sure of the metric abbreviations... Corrected km/l (Kilometers per liter) conversion...
I have a Standard Prius. But similarly I think one of the greatest strengths of Prius Ownership is the value produced on a long road trip. If "time" or fatigue isn't a factor? There is almost no personal transportation choice that allows me to get from point A to point B as economically as my Prius. It's nice to plan where you go...based almost entirely on where you want to be, and NOT on how much it's going to cost you in terms of fuel usage.
