Hi all, So I am considering purchasing a new 2014 prius since I was looking at a 2012 - 2014 low miles prius and new prices are almost as low as the used prices so I am leaning towards a new car. Now I want a Prius Two bliz pearl/dark grey. I have been shopping around locally and went to one dealer with a serious negotiation on price. That dealer managed to talk as low as 20k OTD with 0% apr and my trade in before I walked out. I currently own a 2001 Toyota Celica GT with 92k miles. KBB for trading in has it valued at ~ 3.3k (however hood needs replacement due to using a carbon fiber hood w/ lots of oxidation and has a lot of cosmetic issues on the front from an accident.) I also found out that my catalytic converter might need to be replaced which further lowers the value. Now I set myself a price of 18k OTD & 0% APR with trading in my Celica for the Prius Two in blizz pearl/dark grey interior. Well, a dealer called me and said they're doing up to 125% KBB value pricing and will accept any reasonable offer on the Prius, Corolla, or Camry. So I figured I'd throw my offer and see what happens. Well I wasn't expecting them to say yes but they said they can probably do that and to ask me to bring my car in for an appraisal. Now I am wondering if I could get a better deal than this? I am not desperate to buy a new car right now. Aside from the simple annoyances of an old car, the emissions and cosmetic issues the car runs great. I can get by without an emissions test for another year if needed. (I won't fix the issue as it costs +1k to fix and isnt worth investing.) Would you bite at that price that I was offered or you think I could do better? I also have another dealer that said they would match any offer + $250 lower price if I buy there. I was wondering if it'd be worth pitting each of the two dealers against each other in a price war before i consider pulling the trigger. Before I got this call I was planning on not buying a new car right now and saving some money (I bought my Celica in cash upfront for 7k in 2010 so I don't have to worry about car payments now) I am new to buying a car and am still a full-time grad student finishing up my 2 master degrees in Dec (but have a FT job currently but it is a little uncertain on what my job future is but I have a good resume so I am not too worried on finding another job. My main concern is if I wait for when I truly need a new car will I find a better deal or is this too good to pass up.
Why are you shopping for a new car? You do all the leg work to obtain one, then get what I think is a great price and great terms, then seems to waffle on following through. You seem really unsure of yourself: Found a great car at a great price, but is it really that good of a deal and can you do better; Your current car is falling apart, but it's really not that bad and don't mind doing the work to fix it, unless of course it costs too much; You ask if someone else would do the deal or do they think you could do better; You have a good job, but future is uncertain, but not too concerned about finding another job. Up, down, left, right - you don't seem to know what you want. Until you decide you want to buy a new Prius, the fact you may be able to save another couple hundred on the deal is a moot point. Decide first if you're going to buy a new car. If yes, THEN figure out if you've got a good price - I think you do. Until you know for sure you're going to buy, don't call the dealer back and don't go back to the dealer. Doing so with anything less than a desire to purchase will be a waste of the dealer's time.
Smells shady to me. Post up your buyers order if you go through with it. How to buy a car | PriusChat
I originally was shopping for a new car cause my Celica won't pass emissions and I do not want to invest 1k in repairs to fix it when the value of the car is so low. My registration also needs to be renewed and in order to do so I needed to pass emissions. However, I found out I can get an extension on my emissions and also register my Celica for another two years so my primary concern for getting a new car ASAP is out the window and I don't have to worry about it anymore. After I found that out I stopped looking and have been telling dealers i wasnt interested. The only reason why I called this dealer back is because I wanted to see if they would agree to the price I originally had decided on before I knew that I could reregister my car and extend my emissions without testing. Now that they said it is possible to match I am contemplating going down there to buy it. That is why I am undecided as I was almost about to pull the trigger out of neccesity for a new car, but that is no longer the case for now and I could get away with possibly holding off to see what 2015 model has to offer. (I am guessing since it's a new generation that the price will initially be a couple thousand higher than what this offer is.)
