I’m considering adding a full-size spare tire to my 2018 Prius Four, which did not originally come equipped with any spare. Since I’ll be adding one regardless, I figured a full-size spare would be more practical than a compact one.
Before proceeding, I wanted to ask if anyone here has experience attempting this. Specifically:
    • Will a full-size tire physically fit in the spare tire well?

    • Will it sit level with the trunk floor once installed?

    • I understand the factory foam inserts may need to be trimmed or modified—has anyone done this successfully?

    • Are there any additional modifications required beyond trimming the foam and securing the tire using the existing anchor point?
Any guidance, photos, or insight from those who have attempted this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Attached is a two-page excerpt from the 2016 Prius Owner's Manual, showing both temp and full-size spare tire options. So apparently doable.

FWIW, when I tried dropping a full-sized wheel/tire combo into the spare tire well on my gen 3 it didn't quite fit, was chafing the sidewall, and even without the tool caddy that normally goes atop the temp spare, when I put the hatch floor back on it was an inch or two raised.

But yeah, maybe the spare tire well on gen 4 is a little more generous. The caddy that drops into the wheel is a different shape with the full-size spare option:

I've been looking through other forum posts and it seems like I’ll run into the same issue once I put in a full-size spare—the tire will sit a bit above the level of the trunk floor. That said, from what I’ve gathered (though I could be mistaken), the trunk foam inserts in Prius models that come with a spare tire appear to be slightly taller than the ones in models without a spare. Some people have addressed this by sourcing those taller foam inserts and using them in non-spare models. From there, they either install a compact spare and buy the matching center foam insert, or they skip the center insert altogether and just drop in a full-size spare, which then sits relatively flush with the now-raised floor.

Curious to hear your thoughts—does that line up with what you’ve seen or read on the forums? Do you think it’s worth purchasing the foam inserts from other Gen 4 models that came with a spare and using them in my Prius with a full-size spare? Or would I be better off modifying my current foam inserts—cutting them and adding extra foam where needed to try and get a flush floor? A downside I can see with that approach is that the original tool cutouts might no longer fit properly.

Depends how much you want to spend? My personal rule: I just won’t buy a car that doesn’t come with a properly fitted spare.
