Well, the car finally took its first minor bit of damage requiring an immediate repair. As much as I continually advocate a healthy following distance behind trucks, one of many reasons being to avoid the junk they tend to kick up, it doesn't necessarily help when a gravel truck is going the *other way* on a two-lane road and randomly dropping small missiles into the opposing lane: . . More details here, including the fix, additional technical details, and some advice on packing for future roadtrips. . _H*
My Honda CRX had a cluster of hits like that from all of the road repair trucks. I used to tell people that they came from running a police road block. Tom
That's too bad. And you probably are wise to get it fixed ASAP. But it is kind of neat looking..like a star... I've been as careful as possible with my new car, but still as you point out there is no way to totally avoid the risk and probably eventually a degree of damage. I think the large sloping windshields of Prius (and also my Fit) lend themselves to this type of damage. I've investigated windshield treatments, applications and shields that are suppose to help minimize this type of damage...but whenever I dig far enough I read something that makes me think I'm better off just dealing with individual incidents if and when they occur. I'd be curious if anyone has Diamond Shield or another type of windshield protectant and how they think it actually works.
