I just purchased a 2012 Plug-In to replace the 2007 I've been driving for the past 5 years. It was my unicorn and I've been looking for one local for the past 2 years and finally found one last week. Overall I'm very impressed but I HATE the orange footwell lighting and decided to do something about it today. I pulled out the LED fixtures and was going to just leave them out but I decided to do some tinkering, found out they were easy to open and looked easy to mod. I searched here and found a really old thread about trying to do this but it never went anywhere and one about using Lexus footwell lights (white LEDs) for $10 per or retrofitting LED panels. No one seems to have modded the original LEDs that I could find so here's how it's done.

Pic 1 shows how they open, easy to do with two exacto blades.
Pic 2 shows the polarity coming in, - left | + right
Pic 3 shows the polarity of the LED, - left | + right
Pic 4 + 5 shows the easiest way I found to remove the LED, the legs are welded on so a small carbide burr with a dremel worked great and prepped the surface for soldering. You know you got it when it falls out.
Pic 6 shows the correct orientation for the replacement LED, long = anode (+) short = cathode (-)
Pic 7 cut off the legs leaving about 1.5mm to fold over and crimp to the post.
Pic 8 use good flux and a hot iron and they'll solder really easy.
Pic 9 working great on a bench PSU running @ 14v
Pic 10 both done in under 10 minutes (not including taking pictures) and the LEDs used. 5mm is the original LED's size but I had 3mm on hand and they work fine. They can be had on Amazon for $5.99 for 100.

Can't post a link so just search for B01AUI4W0U
