Lincoln Mercury division spokeswoman Sara Tatchio said Ford already had received 27 orders for the Mercury Mariner Hybrid by early Monday afternoon. The SUV will be sold almost exclusively online. Customers can order the vehicles through Mercury's Web site and pick them up from a local dealer.

Does that really count as a "second" hybrid vehicle for ford. Isn't it essentially the same thing as an Escape? Maybe I better read some more.

Well, I guess the same claim can be made with the HiHy and RX400h. At least they clearly state their clienteles. They don't sell the Mercury brand in Canada any more. All we're left is is the "Ford" Mercury Grand Marquis. (We don't get the Crown Vic)

The Mariner is a rebadged Escape, just as the Mountaineer is a rebadged Explorer.

I disagree. The RX400h and the Highlander Hybrid have totally differently styled bodies, despite having similar underpinnings. The only apparent differences between the Mountaineer and the Escape are the grill and some body trim pieces.

And a big difference in interior trim and standard features. Rule of thumb, if you are purchasing a Ford vehicle, take a look at Mercury first, nicer trim, generally better engine packages and smoother styling.
