Hello out there. I'm about to commit to a deal on my first prius and want to know what you all think about the numbers. Edmunds TMV shows the following values: Trade-in $16,700, Private Party $18,400, Dealer Retail $19,800.

    2012 Prius Two
    22,000 miles
    $17,000

Chime in, what do you think??

based on the price ranges mentioned, the price is right. what is left is the condition and history.

Great point. In terms of condition, it's in the clean to outstanding range. Service records show a synthetic oil change every 5K.

Has anyone had success getting the dealer to throw in fresh floor mats/tint the windows/add new tires, etc.?

some have, some haven't. depends on how badly they want to move it and how willing you are to walk away. it's all part of the negotiation. go for it!

    Too much information absent.

Assuming the vehicle is sterling in regards to accident history and condition, that's a fair price. But the information provided doesn't allow for much evaluation beyond the Black and White of price comparison. There's a lot more to a used car.

Thanks for the comment. Beyond the above information, can you offer your top 3 most important considerations?

Well clearly, you are purchasing the machine you are purchasing. So as much information about vehicle history and condition are critical. Carfax and an inspection I think are almost always a must. Low miles and a "young" life span doesn't guarantee that something bad hasn't happened.

    I would kind of go:

    1. Finding out, and evaluating the condition of the vehicle.
    2. As much knowledge as possible about it's history.
    3. Evaluate comparative price value.

Regardless of age and price, it's not a bargain or good purchase if something has happened to it in it's young life that would make it a bigger risk.

Great input. I know the dealership sold the vehicle when new and it was suburban-driven until recently traded in for something different. Carfax online doesn't show any accidents or otherwise incriminating history on the car. I of course need to have it inspected. It's at a non-Toyota dealer currently...do you recommend a Toyota dealer or independent 3rd party for the inspection?

They've had the car on the lot for about 2 months. Barring any tragic events in the car's history, I'm thinking this is reasonable pricing. If anyone new is reading, chime in!

i like to take a new one for a drive so i have a good frame of reference. then i take the used one (preferably without a salesman) reset the mpg's and take it for a drive under as many conditions as possible. watch the battery meter to see if it's charging and discharging appropriately. test all the equipment in the car to make sure everything works. get a feel for the seat comfort and available positioning along with the steering wheel. check underneath for any fluids and that all aero panels are in place. check the spare tyre well and tools and also the 12v battery area. listen for sounds compared to the new one you drove. etc. if you get stuck with a salesman, tell him to be quiet so you can concentrate. too many people find things after the purchase that they 'didn't notice during the test drive.'

If $17k is your OTD price then I'd say that's a fairly good deal. I paid a little over 18k for mine two years ago with 10,500 miles on it.

It's OTD excluding taxes, which in MO come to about $1,400 o_O

Well my suggestion is to try and get it out the door for 17k and not a penny more! (taxes and everything else they can think of included in the 17k price). If you can bring them cash, certified check or money order i'll bet they'll take it. More and more cars are getting 30+ mileage and gas has stabilized somewhat for awhile anyways. It appears that used Prius's are not holding their value at this time especially the base models.

Prius II comes with a self-retracting vinyl trunk cover. The vinyl retracts into a horizontal bar that seats behind the back seat. The bar could easier be removed, you might want to add it on your list.

The OP should keep in mind the cover might be stowed in the compartment under the hatch floorboards.

    Get suggestion.

Might also make sure the spare is in there too.

Go to the toyota owners website and put in the VIN # of the car and see the service history at the dealership. Many non-Toyota dealers buy cars at auctions with high miles and turns back the miles. I had this happen once on a car listed at 50,000 miles and the service history at the Toyota Owners Website showed the last service it was 280,000 miles. At the Toyota owners website it'll also show you which dealership sold the car. If it shows out of state, you might want to have a closer look.

The car really sounds like a good deal, the redflag for me will be that it has been at the dealer for 2 months. A car at this price range and low miles should sell much quicker. I would check the owner's website to have a better peace of mind.

Looks like negotiations have us stuck at $17,400. I know it's just $400 from what I want to pay but I thought they'd meet me at $17K. Debating...

$400 should not break the deal. Tell them 17k or you'll walk! Do you have the cash in hand or will you be financing? I'm telling you money up front takes the deal.
