Swazi-Xhosa singer Miriam Makeba died in Castel Volturno, near Caserta, Italy, yesterday evening, of a heart attack, shortly after taking part in a concert organized to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a Neopolitan-based transnational mafia-like organization. Makeba, a longtime peace and civil rights activist, and a true citizen of the world, was 76. Miriam Makeba I remember her most for one of her songs that was featured often on Northern Exposure. It made the soundtrack CD.
