Perhaps a little too polemic for some: Source: The Alabama Office of the State Climatologist :: Dr. John R. Christy So this is the official Alabama position on climate change from Christy's testimony on August 1, 2012: Source: http://nsstc.uah.edu/aosc/docs/ChristyJR_SenateEPW_120801.pdf
If there is no other official statements or policy by the Alabama govt., I'd agree that Dr. Christy may be setting the standard. Beat that, you other states. I'm not going to work through the remaining 48, but it turns out that Alaska does have one State of Alaska - Climate Change in Alaska Starting from a committee founded by a famous recent governor As far as I've read it, there is a lot to like. A effort to discuss a range of 'local climate futures' and what to do about it. Absent is the superfluous re-teaching of the stuff we either know already, or that (we others) fundamentally reject. I would not think that every state needs to apply the same level of effort as Alaska though. It is unique in size, coastlines, ice, permafrost, and probably several other things.
I'll put my governor up against any governor, when it comes to stupid statements about the climate. The state climatologist though can't even play in the same league as christy. Texas even has state climate change models for precipitation. He is an aggie (texas A&M) like the governor so he does get a lot wrong.
"This was (another) unfortunate episode in misrepresenting the science of climatology." I love Christy.Hes apparently one of the few honorable scientists. Only 3% are honorable if you believe Jerry Brown's website. Hes also gentleman enough not to name the liar that heads GISS.
If Hanson included the 1930s in his calculations,he would have had to conclude that the 1930s dustbowl was also caused by AGW. You cant say that 2012 was caused by AGW but 1930s was not. But if you eliminate the 30s from the study you can lie as much as you want to. And Hanson wants to lie a lot.
Mojo, it beats me why the Hansen PNAS paper did not include a longer window. They gave reasons, but it's not how I would have done it. Perhaps in response to such concerns, there is posted http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/mailings/2012/20120811_DiceDataDiscussion.pdf A longer analysis including the 1930s. Not peer reviewed, not published, but it does answer the '1930's question' to the authors' satisfaction at least. If the topic is of interest, y'all will want to take a look. Anyway, this year's US drought is not leading to dramatic soil redistribution. I consider this a great success for the US Soil Conservation Service. Years (decades?) of convincing farmers not to do things the old way. This has not yet been fully appreciated. And AustinG 'comes out' about the Aggies. I do declare...
I scanned the paper and want to compare and contrast it with Christy's assertions in his Senate statement ... under the BEST thread. Having grown up in Oklahoma, I remember the last dust storm in the 1950s although I maintain the Oklahoma dust storm really never ends ... it just gets 'less bad.' In college I had a record player and noticed that after the first or second play, all of my records seemed to have a lot of 'noise'. No matter what I did to keep the needle clean and the records in their covers, the pervasive dust always found a way. I used to say you could dust the mantle at sunrise and have to do it again at sundown. Still, when you fly over Oklahoma and look out a window towards the sun-side, you'd be amazed at how many ponds are in every section. If there is any gully or wash, you'll likely find a dam holding a small, mud-colored pond. Bob Wilson
I was cleaning out a SPAM trap e-mail when I was reminded of this: The article explains why inflamatory language should be avoided: Source: Hail of bullets? National Weather Service calls ammo request 'clerical error' | Times 247 Bob Wilson
The news did cause a great many jokes around here. That clerical error still doesn't explain why fisheries need hollow point rounds. Its not like they are part of the post office
There are poachers. Not sure if NoAA protects Abalone and Shark Fins in Ca ,but high prices will surely invite poaching.
