I wanted to be able to open the hatch from inside easily. Took out the tray, pulled off the latch frame and found the lever had a hole in it. Threaded a heavy twist tie into it, brought it out through the latch opening and twisted a button cell flashlight as a pull. It doesn't interfere with the hatch operation and opens when pulled towards the passenger side.
