I'm reassembling the car after replacing the head gasket, and there is this bolt that sits under a hose, the hose sits under the EGR. Socket slipped and broke this part, I think it screws into the transmission? (I'm not 100% what that block of metal is right there, it is to the right of the engine (looking at it from the front of the car), and I've mostly been focused on the head itself and above.

Trying to figure out what this part is so I can replace it.

Circled in blue where it screwed in.

    Transaxle vent.

Until it's replaced, I might stick some tape or something over that hole, so no grit falls into the tranny fluid.

I spend about as much time in Durham as I do in Oxford.

I appreciate it! I did get a replacement (which also broke quickly...its a fragile part.) And then got the replacement for the replacement. Car is reassembled and back to the overheating problem.

That's wild I don't know how you're breaking those usually my socket on my wrench goes right around the flats and it comes right out doesn't mess with the shaft with the hat sitting on it but oh well You can also take a 16th inch drill bit and drill down a bolt and then drill sideways until you hit the hole you drilled up the middle and screw that in gently You don't even have to tighten it with a wrench I mean it's not going anywhere put you some thread locker blue on it and just hand tighten it in and let it dry you'll never break it again of course this thing doesn't serve much purpose anyway That's mainly there so that if you overfill the transmission and you have a lot of fluid sloshing around in the transmission the air that the sloshing around creates vents out of that vent. So if you don't overfill the transmission you should be in good shape If that wasn't there it could blow out of some gasket or seal like the drive axle seals but I kind of doubt it I don't think it builds up that kind of pressure. but it is there for safety.

The second break was from the socket. I think I just turned it a little too hard and the socket went diagonal. When I put it in after that, I was just more careful and used a box wrench so I could watch exactly what was happening.
