My last Marine duty station: Substance in envelope sickens 11 at Marine base in Virginia - NBC News Eleven people reported feeling ill and three were taken to a hospital Tuesday after an envelope containing an unidentified substance was opened at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in suburban Washington, D.C., officials said. . . . A gunnery sergeant opened the envelope, which was received at about 4 p.m. ET, the base said Tuesday night. People who were exposed reported symptoms including itchy hands and faces and bloody noses, a Marine official told NBC News. The building was evacuated immediately. . . . My last day in uniform, I walked to my VW MicroBus and the uniform went in before I did. A year later, my duffle bag and uniforms were at the curb on trash pickup day. The house owner asked if he could have it and I said 'sure.' The Marines taught a lot of lessons that I learned quickly enough and share as needed. I'm hoping whatever this substance is gets quickly resolved. But I would feel the same if it were an Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, or Army base. This is not sentiment but clarification as some of the news articles are inaccurate: location of Marine Corps headquarters - there are several small bases around the DC area where the 'ceremonial' Marines live and perform with dress blues spit and polish. But Henderson Hall is the administrative headquarters where assignments are made and resources managed. most live off base - insane considering the cost but that was the last time I slept in an open bay. Only E1s and E2s 'lived' there along with the petty criminals being out processed for violations of the UCMJ. I hated that the baby Marines were bunked with the worst. In the 18 months I was stationed there, I lived off base but they did build room style barracks during that time. If someone had a personal beef with the Marine Corps, this would be the first place to attack. Bob Wilson
Prompt irritation of skin and mucous membranes rules out many scary things. This should be reported promptly unless there is some national security implication. In which case I hope it never gets reported. I know; fat chance.
The three who went to hospital were released: Suspicious letter sickens 11 at Va. military base | WTOP The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the FBI are investigating a suspicious letter received at Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia on Tuesday. A hazardous materials team was dispatched after the letter containing an unknown substance sickened 11 and sent three to the hospital. The three have since been released from the hospital. . . . “Personnel in the affected building took immediate preventative measures by evacuating the building,” the Pentagon said. “Base officials … are coordinating with local hazmat teams and FBI.” Bob Wilson
Haters gonna hate. I hope that the miscreant is caught. My base nature also hopes that it's the Marines that catch him or her, first.
