This is happening on a brand new 2010 Prius without navigation. There is a low volume but annoying high pitched noise from the system monitor display on the dash that seems to have a volume proportional to how much information is displayed on it. It seems loudest when the animated vehicle display is shown (sorry I can't remember the official name of the mode). Right now I've disabled the display. Is this something that is normal or worth a visit back to the dealer? Thanks
I'd noticed a similar whine, but had attributed it to the Plasma-cluster in the driver's-side vent, since I only heard it from my left ear. Will keep an ear out for the display, and volume chgs. When in doubt, the dealer should figure it out, I'd say.
I think it's normal, and if it's at the level I think it is, you have very good hearing. I don't mean that sarcastically. I have some high frequency hearing loss due to age and profession, I don't think I could hear it. I believe the normal whine would never be heard over the engine noise of a normal car. I assume you only notice this noise when the AC is off and maybe while your sitting in your garage, ready light on but no radio etc?
Did some more checking on my IV. The whine for me, like a64's, is from hearing loss - guess I wasn't used to hearing it (not hearing it?) in my old Geo. Though when I stuck my head as far up the dash as I could, it sounded like a very quiet fan going near the display. Didn't have any cabin cooling fans on, but I imagine with all the gizmos there's gotta be a PC-type fan in there somewhere. See similar post in this forum called Buzzing when logo displayed. I'd still recommend you take it to the dealer.
