I suspect their cost to profit ratio is much higher on regular cars and what good is being #1 in sales if it's your least profitable car? Especially when Tesla is selling a similar priced all electric vehicle that's 5 years ahead of the rest of the industry. Also, when you compare fossil fuel subsidies to climate change fighting subsidies... As in this has more to do with the arse backwards political climate that is currently more interested in getting rich denying climate change then rapidly addressing it. I could tell you one thing any medium size small hit in the front in easily total one out in a body shop just like the Chevy bolt . The coolant air purge process on the Clarity was so difficult one of the shops could not do it correctly turned it down after repairing it and towed it to a Honda shop to get it done. The air conditioning repair I did on the Chevy bolt 2018 very small hit in the front end $14,000 in parts and labor not including the damage to the high voltage high amperage battery cable from the rear HV battery to the front inverter. The body shop does not want to do the high-voltage cable from the rear high voltage battery to the front high-voltage inverter. The dealer gave a ballpark estimate without seeing it $5000-$10,000 just to replace two large high current battery wires from the front to the rear of the vehicle. Just the battery cables are enough to total out the vehicle in combination with a small hit. High voltage work is like kryptonite to auto repair folks... Of course irony of it is, an auto repair shop couldn't operate without a 220v circuit power their compressor and other equipment. Once the battery pack is disarmed it's just some big wires, no big deal...
I know a few people in LA who bought those to hold their carpool lane stickers. I almost never see them in the East.
