Does Prius v aerodynamic drag affect MPGs a lot? Prius v, 134 HP, 1.8L gas engine, only 3,274 lbs curb weight Camry Hybrid 200 HP, 2.5L gas engine, 3,435 lbs curb weight And Prius v only gets 1 more MPG than Camry Hybrid ?? (42 vs 41) Wow that Cd must bite. Or is something up with drivetrain?
Are you talking EPA or Fuelly (real world) MPG difference? Lets go with real world if data exists. Recently some real driving v data was posted vs. speed vs. liftback and v was impressive there.
Try cramming as much stuff into a Camry's trunk as you can fit into a Prius v. Having the shape to do that kills you at speed. The Camry is getting impressive real world mileage according to fuelly. Not like the III though. So we see designs that have efficient air flow over their surfaces help immensely.
OK here is side-by-side comparison from FuelEconomy.gov Prius v EPA=42 Fuelly=42.5 Camry Hybrid LE EPA=41 Fuelly=40.3 Camry Hybrid XLE EPA=40 Fuelly=38.2 Prius Liftback EPA=50 Fuelly=49.3 So about +2 MPG for the Prius v vs. TCHLE
Can say that again, like 50% more. Pretty sure Camry hy Cd is .27 and isn't the v's .29? wj's right, fuelly shows 2 more for v. It's funny, when I pick u a rental Camry, the avg FE is often something like 38 MPG for the previous renters .... I reset the gage, get it warmed up and boom, shoots up to 43+ for me. Seems the rental car drivers are rookies or leadfoots. I wasn't hypermiling the other day and turned Cam Hy LE back in at 45.8 MPG on gage.
My 2 cents worth thinks that a Prius owner is more likely to be seriously into the fuel economy thing than a HyCam owner and an XLE HyCam owner to be more into luxury "just drive it" transportation than an LE owner. That could explain much of the Fuelly-EPA difference. between the different models. Code: Fuelly-EPA Prius v EPA=42 Fuelly=42.5 +0.5 Prius Liftback EPA=50 Fuelly=49.3 -0.7 Camry Hybrid LE EPA=41 Fuelly=40.3 -0.7 Camry Hybrid XLE EPA=40 Fuelly=38.2 -1.8
