I have entered the VIN on several sites but still can't figure out the "model" number, like many folks here have in their profiles. (When signing up, I selected 2 but I have no idea). VIN search says "Series" is NHW20L.
I just looked and there are some numbers I can't identify but nothing that strikes me as a model number.
There were three models. One base model with no extra Packages of options. Model 1220. A second model with one or more of the Packages of options. Model 1224. A third Touring model with revised suspension and the only model with 16" wheels. Model 1226. Most were the second model with one of the following Packages. My old 2008 Prius was the second Model 1224 Package 3. Package #3 Smart Key System Backup camera Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) Anti-theft system Auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink® universal transceiver JBL® AM/FM 6-disc in-dash CD changer with nine speakers in seven locations, auxiliary audio jack, MP3/MA playback capability and satellite radio capability Hands-free phone capability via Bluetooth® wireless technology In my signature I called it a 2008 Prius 3. If it had been a Touring I might have called it a 2008 Prius Touring 3. If it was the base model I could of called it simply a 2008 Prius.
Does the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) identify the “level”, not sure. seems like the usual method of identification is to look at what it’s equipped with, compare with sales brochures.
Not directly from the vin in a decoder. A dealer's part department can see the equivalent of a build sheet with specific parts for that vin. From the vin the owner can determine it is a gen2 Prius NHW20. From the Toyota owners site you can get basics like colors, date of first use, etc. But it does not include factory packages or optional equipment from the distributor or dealer. This is my 2008: Note it was "ordered" in May and delivered six weeks later from an allocation, much like today. Back then it was $4 gas driving demand. They sold at MSRP but some buyers would flip them for several thousand more. Today the dealers are taking the extra markup. VIN Decoder:
Thanks! Although we bought it new, I can't find any of the original sales paperwork, but I did find a page of handwritten notes. In my notes, I wrote the base price was $22,325, so based on the info above, that would indicate Model 1224. I also wrote "Package 2, Accessory Z-1" with options listed as costing $852. Can I presume that the info on our profiles listed as "Model" is actually "Package" number?
1224 has packages. I believe all 1224s came with package 1, most had another as well. See the last paragraph of post 4.
