Recently installed a curt trailer light. I modified the V plug in harness to work with the C. I noticed the fan was running louder then usual. I took the right rear panel off were the HV exhaust vent it and there is no ducting from the factory. The battery duct just goes to the back of the seat and vents out in that right corner right behind the 12V. It makes its way up and over the right rear tire tub then what ever comes out of the rear exhaust, just vents out with momentum from down below. No duct guiding it from what I can see? I went back and zip tied a wire that was in the path to sides were other factory wiring runs. This seemed to fix the issue after making everything neat? Not sure what caused it but it seems to be from wiring that was in the way? When I run the HV fan with my SG and remove the shock tower assess cover on the passenger side. I can feel hot air coming out. This might be an easy way to get more exhaust venting for anyone that wishes to do that.
My fan is no longer running high. I suspect it had something to do with my install of the trailer harness. I went back and cleared any upstrucktion and now its running perfictly. I just left the strut access panal open for better heat dissipation.
There is no ducting in that area, if you think it's running hot, slow down, run the AC to cool the battery compartment. The rule is: If you need AC, so does the HV battery.
Once it's going past 106f-118f on the scan gauge it's getting to hot and somthing is wrong. You will hear the fan really come on at that point.
Louder than normal? You shouldn't hear that fan at all. Car has no tint and no windshield shade And cabin getting super hot? Fan on all the time means your really stressing the battery out And shortening its life..
With the Gen III's, it is normal for the battery fan to run in mild to warm weather, especially with a lot of start/stop driving such as in local city driving. The fan speed is generally so slow that it would be difficult to hear. When you get in the 115-120F range the fan speed is getting up in speed mode 4 or 5 range and you can hear it then. The fan speed also varies with vehicle speed so at highway speeds it can be really noticeable.
I've only actually heard the fan when something was accidentally blocking the vent. In warm weather, you can put your hand in front of it and feel that it's on low.
I thought our gen 3 fan was never running, never heard it. But since adding XGauges for battery fan speed and battery temp (to ScanGauge), I see it's running a fair amount. Up to fan speed 4 (out of 5 or 6?), when temps around 40~45C. That's highest I've seen.
I'm about to buy an OBD2 bluetooth adapter so I can monitor these types of parameters. My HV battery fan was running at what sounded like max today (it was as hot as 105F on the thermometer, but not unusual in this area and I hadn't notice it running this fast this summer until today).
