I got a letter from the State of Wisconsin the other day, saying I owed more tax on my car. They decided to tax me for the doc fee, but not acknowledge that I got a rebate on the car from Toyota. So I wrote them this nice little letter. I hope that gets their attention. Stupid tax people.
Oh, to see the look on the person's face when they open that envelope and stare in disbelief at the $ amount on that check. LOL!!
follow up: state laws are STUPID. now that the DOR site is back up and running, and i got in contact with a toyota dealer in my hometown, i found out that the doc fee is taxable and manufacturer rebates count as a cash down payment, so they don't reduce your taxable purchase. ARGH! it's not the $21 that makes me mad... it's the fact that now i can't send that letter. it would have been great.
Naw, I appreciate it when anyone is correct. If I'm wrong, I adjust my thinking and update my premises. Goverment people that I've dealt with don't do that themselves, though
It's better that you didn't send the letter. Otherwise they would have forwarded it to the IRS and Wisconsin Income Tax Board with a note explaining that the $400 rebate is taxable income. And they would have CC'd you with a BIG smiley face below their signature. When it comes to taxes, you pay now AND pay later, and "snot" is taxed at the highest rate of all! Mark Baird Alameda CA
Galaxee, I am very happy that you did not send the letter. We all got a good chuckle out of it, but I doubt the tax people would have had much of a sense of humor. I gave up a loooooong time ago assuming I was ever right in a dispute with anyone who deals with numbers for a living. When I do object, I try to make it more like a "can you look into this for me because I just don't understand". That gives them an out when and if they do find they made a mistake. No "defensiveness".
well its a bummer. but i have never known rebates to be tax free. i "bought" a pair of cellphones that was supposed to be free. both had mail rebates that was instantly credited because i ordered them online, but i had to pay taxes on the upgrade price before the rebates were taken although i never had to pay anything so my two free phones cost me like $20 or in taxes... but i live in WA state and there is no income tax so they get us by sales tax...which is not cheap here...
hmph, i'd be happy to pay income and state taxes in wi only... did all our income taxes for wi, nc, and fed the other day. if we paid straight taxes to wi we'd be getting 1200 back this year. instead we get 220 from stupid nc. yes, that's a 1000 premium for the joy of melting all summer and no snow in winter. guess in the long run it's worth it... sigh... meanwhile 7% income tax, 2% food tax and 7% sales tax in nc is not cool.
ok... we can always use a good scientist type. have a good cancer center here, excellent burn center, childrens hospital.... now we dont rate with the medical research triangle you live in the middle of... but we do ok... great weather...if you are a duck (as we pass 29 consecutive dasy of rain)
