Today was a big maintenance day, change oil/filter, air filter, serpentine belt, and rotate tires. I just recently rolled over 100K miles and it was time for some diligent maintenance. I noticed on the removable top cover of the ICE air filter that there is what appears to be a post-filter or engine backfire retarder of some sort. On close inspection it looks more like a final stage very fine filter. It also looks quite dirty. Anyone know anything about this? Does it have to be replaced periodically as an integral part of the air filter top cover? Can it be cleaned?
There does not seem to be a part number for it. AIR CLEANER. Fits: TOYOTA | Village Toyota Parts 17705 seems to be the entire top.
That contains charcoal. The idea is to absorb HC that comes up from the intake manifold, as a smog-prevention measure. No maintenance is required, leave it alone.
Oh yes. Changed by the dealer at 91K as recommended. I felt confident that I could have done it myself, but then what to do to properly recycle quarts of hazardous waste. In the end I decided it was worth having the dealer do it. In regard to my air filter box, I will leave well enough alone.
One easy and simple way to get rid of used automotive fluids is just to take them to your local Pima County landfill which will have a recycling area for those items.
