I had the oil changed at a local "Pit Stop" and just checked it after about 500 miles. It is 1/4" ABOVE the full mark! The owners manual strongly advises against over filling. What damage can be done by such sloppy workmanship? What should I do other than DIY all future maintenance?

i always check mine when i get it back. if it's overfilled, make them let some out. i got a sweet little syphon pump to do it myself. almost everyone overfills. 1/4" isn't horrible. too much can get into the throttle body.

1/4" is not bad. I would just live with it 'til next time. They probably put in 5 quarts, spec being 4.5 (US) quarts, with filter change. If you can: get bulk oil changes, make sure they know and use spec'd amount. Or with bottles : let 'em know, get them to give you the last 1/2 quart bottle next time.

DIY? Yeah I'd be all over that. There's something soul-crushing, a line of idling cars at Mr. Lube, all the drivers heads-down, looking at their cell phones. :(

Worst case, overfilling can blow out an oil seal and start a messy leak that would cost hundreds to repair. I would also worry about the kind of oil they used. That 0W-20 can be very difficult to find, even in auto parts stores.
