There's a 07 Prius at the local salvage yard. I could buy the smart key from it but was wondering if the 07 would be interchangeable with my 05, once reprogrammed.
No, not as a smart key. You cannot pair a used smart key with a new car. You can, however, program it to work as a normal fob without the smart key functions. Tom
I only have one FOB (car purchased used) and thinking about checking for another. My 05 PRI doesn't plug into the car to start the vehicle. What are the differences between a plain FOB and a smart key. In other words, what do I shop for?
It sounds like you have SKS so you have to get a fob with the silver logo on it. As Tom stated above, you can't fully program a used fob to have the SKS functions. The best thing you can do is buy a new fob from a dealer and have them program the car to accept the new fob. It's not cheap...
The used one I saw listed looks identical to mine, silver logo on the back. The only functions I really need, open the doors and start the car. Do I need SKS for that? Still don't really understand what SKS does (no owners manual)
FOB vs SKS Basically an FOB is a key that you can use the buttons on the front to unlock and lock the car. Once inside you have to insert the key into the recepticle in order to start the car. SKS A smart key can do all the above plus you can unlock the doors while merely touching the handle (as long as the key is on your person). You can also start the car without inserting the key in the recepticle.
