I have a 18 Prime but am renting a car here in Arizona for a weeks. The gave me the latest Prius. Nice car and as I got in, I thought....wow, this looks familiar. Other than the rear storage (battery) and how the rear seats fold down, is this the same interior as on the Prime? The only thing that might differ it would appear is some of the buttons of course, (I have the Prime Basic so have the smaller screen), the phone holder tray is missing on the hybrid Prius and I am not sure if there is as much padding on the door where I rest my arm. Is that about it? just curious....
Yes, the Prime and the Gen 4 Prius are essentially the same car with some differences. (The plug-in was previous treated like an "engine" option but for the 2nd generation, Toyota decided to give the plug-in its own name - Prime, to further differentiate it from the regular Prius by name).
Here in the UK the Prime is just called a plug in Prius and most dealers don't even list the plug in as a plug in, just a Prius. The only way you can tell it's a plug in, from the dealers descriptions online, is the front and rear ends in the pictures. The prices are about the same as the normal Prius as well.
There is no Prime trim Plugin-base in the US. It appears you have a Prime Plus if you have the lower trim model.
Toyota nominally added the term Liftback to identify the original Prius and help differentiate between it & the Plug-in/Prime.
