So my MAINT REQD light just started going off again . . . I just passed the 45k milestone on my odometer. . . I've been doing the 5k service myself easily but I've been bringing it in to the dealer for 15k and 30k service. I was just curious . .. is it really necessary? It costs like 75 dollars for intermediate service . .. the brochure says they top off all the fluids, do a break check change oil and filter etc. Should I just do this myself?
You can do it yourself if you can: Change engine oil and filter - Inspect engine and cabin air filters and replace them if necessary - Inspect brake and suspension components and correct problems found if any - Rotate tires and reset their inflation pressures appropriately. Prius maint is very easy, and much resembles that of conventional front wheel drive vehicles. If you can do those, you can do this. IMO the question is do you want to be a DIY? It is not difficult; it takes a bit of time, the correct tools and attention to your personal safety. Putting your body under the car and all that.
