Volkswagen’s U.S. Diesel Strategy: An Interview with Doug Skorupski by Jonathan Spira Read the full story »
I sit back and await the heated debate for and against diesel, probably including many 30+ year old stereotypes about diesel cars being smoky and smelly. Diesels do have a place, though I'm not sure a compact car is it. A larger SUV perhaps.
I want to see them in the smaller(full size and less) pick ups, and not the oversized V8 ones in the heavyduty pick ups. Hybrid tech isn't at the point where it can offer fuel savings while retaining comparable payload levels to straight ICE trucks.
Perhaps we're confusing European and American definitions of large? The oversize trucks of yours should only be diesel, but most SUV's, if not all should at least have a diesel option stateside. Replace that 5 litre V8 or even V6 with a diesel equivalent. You'll get more mpg's and much more pulling power. Perhaps a diesel option on anything where a hybrid won't really cut it.
