invisible shield or repaint?

Better (time/cost) to purchase invisible paint protection or just touch up/repaint

    In your opinion...
    Is it better (time/cost) to get an invisible shield (3m, Ventureshield, etc.) early, or just touch up/repaint chipped areas later?

    After four years/28K miles (mostly city) with no shield the great majority of road dings on mine are on the front bumper. There are a half-dozen or so on the hood and none elsewhere. Some the bumper dings are big enough that a shield would not have stopped them.
