My sister has a 2006 prius that hasnt been driven in a few years since her husband passed away. My daughter installed a battery at the beginning of last year and it was running but the dash began going out and back in randomly. She took it to dealer that said it was about $1000 to fix the dash issue which she didnt want to pay for so it sat again. She didnt try to start the car for another few weeks and it was dead again. So its just sat ever since. She now has to get it out of her driveway in a week and doesnt know what to do with it. She just thinks she should call a junk company to come get it but some of us think she may be able to still sell it since it has low mileage, approx 84,000. and the original hybrid was replaced in 2014. Any advice?
Is it drivable? Can it move under its own power? Perhaps there might be a scrap program (like Cash for Clunkers) that you can take advantage of to purchase a new car.
I would get somebody to charge the 12v battery and get it running. Then have a dealer check it from a high level. $150 worth of effort may be worth $3000. A sale of a running car with a dash problem is very possible where a non runner is worth a couple hundred junk. If she then decides to keep it, tell her to drive it every week for at least 30 minutes. Otherwise it will lose that $3000 of value. Finding an independent hybrid mechanic may fix the dash panel for less than $500 rather than replace it. See part prices alone below. Then add another $1000 to the value. The lowest priced 2004 Prius with 177,000 miles is $6,500 at Tampa Hybrids. Think about that. prius combination meter 2006 | eBay
it is worth quite a lot to the right person. can it be moved somewhere and put up for sale? a 2014 battery may still be fine, and a diy'er can change the combo meter for a hundred bucks. 84k is just broken in for a prius call todd at tampa hybrids, great guy, and a member here. he'll fix you up
