Is there a personal setting so that the NEWEST messages appear on page 1 when you click to read a topic. If so I would appreciate a response. If not, I wonder if that is something they could do in an upgrade? Cary
I thought for sure there was at one time. Perhaps I'm thinking of something else. I'm digging around in My Controls but can't find anything. I'll keep looking.
There isn't a setting that I know of with the board software that we currently use. I just click on this icon that you see before the name of each topic - it takes you straight to the newest post.
I swear that the way it used to work before the upgrade was that if you clicked on a thread title in the "view new posts" list, then it would take you to the first new post that you haven't seen yet in the thread. For instance, if yesterday you read a thread that had 14 posts in it and today it has 20, when you clicked on the title in the "View new posts" list, it would take you to post #15, not post #1 or post #20. I liked that. Of course, I could be hallucinating.
Not a Read-Newest-Post-First option, but (while reading the topic) you can change the display mode to “outline†by clicking on the “options†button which is on the right side of the blue topic header located above. At least this way you won't have 14 pages to read . . . just an outline of the posts . . . then just click on the posts you wish to read fully. The Free Word Association topic will still give you 11 pages of outlines.
"read new posts" seems to jump me right into where I last left off in a thread too, so obviously some notion of who's read what is kept in the database for each user. But the posts are still in chronological order. [which IMO makes the progression easier to follow...] If you come in as a not-logged-in guest, it tends to drop you on the last page of posts, presumably as being the closest approximation of "newest" if no actual record can be found. . In fact, since the last-ten-posts block seems to have vanished in the upgrade, I find myself using the "view new posts" thing quite a bit. Reloading that page sometimes shuffles things around a little, or maybe that's just driven by who's posting where. . _H*
I hope I'm not in the minority, but I like the way the board works. If I'm visiting a new thread, I like to read the first few posts at least, to understand what's being discussed. If I see a thread that I want to jump to the end I either click on the icon for this or on the "last post by" link in "view new posts". GreenHybrid is set up to see the last post first and I am constantly having to dig to the first post because so often threads drift off on tangents. PC is mo better IMHO.
