Is this a problem, or am I too picky?

I just got a 2010 Prius IV with Solar Moonroof. The nav system does not change it's brightness at night when I turn on the headlights. This means I have to go into the display setup screen and manually turn the brightness down at night, or the screen lights up the cabin, and then the next day it is too dim to read, so I have to manually turn it up.

Is this a function that is not working, or have I just not found the 'sweet spot' or something?

On the lower left of your dash is a brightness wheel switch. If it is all the way clicked up it will stay at full brightness. Check that to find out what postion it is in.

If it was all the way up, turn it down below the click. The brightness of both the MID and everything else should be lower at night and the nav screen will revert to night mode (reverse image).

David A. is right about what to do.
I agree with you that it's a real problem. Given the huge slant of the windshield, the
display lights, when turned up at night, create a very annoying and view-interfering reflection on the windshield. It was several nights before I figured out the source of the reflection and started to turn down the lights manually.

The only thing that I can see Toyota doing to fix this problem is setting the display lights to be on high whenever your headlights are off (which might annoy some people if that's too bright for them), and having the dimmer switch operate only when the headlights are on--for most folks, that would be at night, and you could set the dimmer.
As someone pointed out on another thread, with LED or similar displays replacing physical dials, etc., we probably just have to get used to this.

There are software updates, and they could add a different setting for when the lights are on as opposed to off.

It will be the dimmer wheel. It's a common user error.

As another thought, on the Gen II there is a display option that forces the MFD to daylight mode, just like the dimmer wheel. I don't know if this option was carried over to the Gen III.

pretty sure the gen 2 and gen 3 work the same in this respect. default, if the wheel is not clicked all the way to the top, is the nav darkens in low light. in any case, it and mfd can both be turned down manually.

When you turn on your headlight does the nav turn in to night mode (black map)? If not you need to go in to setting and in to nav and change auto day/night change (something light in nav setting)

If the nav screen is the same as the Gen II then you can set the day and night brightness seperately. Seems like your night brightness is set too bright. I think the hand book will tell you how to adjust it.

Or roll down the dimmer wheel. Both produce the same effect. You might have to check both, as I posted previously.

To change from the night mode (black background) to the day mode (white background) on the Gen III, go to the Display screen and turn your headlights on. A Day Mode button will appear. Select the Day Mode button to turn the screen from the black background to the white background.

You can also roll the dimmer wheel up past the click.
