So I just took the wheel covers off my newly purchased used 2011 and really like the silver rims. Now I need to buy some hub covers. So far so good. But, while getting in close to give the dirty wheels a cleaning I see that the front hubs are pretty rusty. Pardon me if this is a stupid question, but are they supposed to look like this? I am a bit freaked out by rust as I just had to trade in my very low mileage babied 2004 Tundra, frame was rusted out as was the differential cover, front sway bars, front brakes, rear brake bell housing..etc.. etc.. Needless to say i was not expecting to have to buy a new car. So now any signs of rust has me wetting my pants.. Here is a pic. Oh the car was certified by dealer so I would like to think they saw this and had no worries, but who knows?
whew thanks Bisco, I think I have PTSD with rust. At what point does it need to be removed? Didnt they used to pack them full of grease and put a cover on them, even behind wheel covers?
there are a few threads here by people who do a lot of rust removal and coating. if it concerns you, you should look them up and undertake a program. i've never heard of anything rusting through though.
Oh for sure... seriously though when I found out that the Tundra needed over 4 grand worth of repairs due to rust and rot, I about cried, i really loved that truck, as did my dog. But I traded it for the Prius and I'm starting a new chapter.. So yea, Im totally OCD at this point, living in the North East wrecks cars and I am a little at the mercy of the mechanics.
Thanks guys.. I haven't searched it yet but Im gonna assume there is a list of user maintenance things on this forum. Much to learn..
