i would say gm is losing money to save face and toyota is looking to the future. and it looks like the future is in south korea.
Now the 3.1% market share for hybrids makes sense: Source: U.S. auto sales fall short of expectations in July| Reuters I was worried that the lowering gasoline prices might have reduced Prius sales but that does not appear to be the case. Another hypothesis crashes into a facts and data. Bob Wilson
...next week or so we get the California 2nd quarter sales data at CNCDA.org. But I am thinking Ca. HOV plays strongly into PiP and Volt results.
Prius PHV is almost completely out of stock. There are very few actually left on dealer lots. Volt has both 2014 and 2015 readily available on dealer lots, which means there's incentive to get rid of the old inventory. There are also reports of leases expiring and those Volt owners replacing their Volt with a newer model. It other words, the diagnosis was incomplete.
I have little doubt that inventory of the PHV is lower than for the Volt at this time. I usually pay almost no attention to dealer inventories but I don't recall reading about serious availability problems. A trivial search revealed in-stock availability in my area. Dianne Whitmire just posted July 30 in her most recent update that she had 80 plugins in-stock with HOV stickers and with strong discounts (lease deals, $3,000 discount for cash buyers etc.). There's a regional Toyota 2014 clearance sale going on that includes the plugin. There doesn't seem to be any shortage in California that would stop anyone from buying. In any case, I was just working from the last four months of sales numbers like Bob Wilson but posting a humorous alternative analysis. I don't mean it to be taken very seriously. There are all sorts of factors behind these sales numbers including inventory control, HOV sticker availability, local credits and rebates, etc. I don't claim to really understand it.
