Picked up my Prius C2 yesterday and was pumped! I drive tons of miles and traded in my 99 V6 Honda Accord, cannot wait to see the differences in gas! I declined the extended warranty at the dealership because I just didn't have the money and was hesistant about it. They offered it at like $1650. Was this a dumb thing to do? Also, yesterday conveniently it snowed and I had the fine pleasure of driving an hour in a little snowstorm and didn't notice any slipping so I was quite thankful. This morning there was snow packed roads and I only noticed slipping as I turned around one corner. So far not too bad, however saving up for some snow tires.
IMHO turning down the extended warrenty was the smart thing to do, dumb would have been buying it. You might try saving $1650 over the life of your car loan, then using that money for repairs, my guess is that you will be ahead of the game.
Congrats on the new C! I was checking them out yesterday at the NAIAS. And smart idea to decline the warranty - these cars have pretty respectable records of reliability and come with a decent warranty from the factory.
You're gonna love it! I declined the warranty, too. The day I made the deal, I was wearing a Red Sox hoodie. Well, the finance guy is trying to sell me on the extended warranty, sees my reluctance, then gets this bubbly girl from across the sales floor. We "bonded" over having grown up 50 miles apart [I think I bought gas once 15 years ago in the next town over from where she was from], but in the end the tactic didn't work.
I was thankful that my dealership didn't feel shady to me. I had great customer service and I didn't feel cheated in any way. That's an interesting tactic though. The finance guy was like I'll discount this warranty for you from over $2000 to $1650. I said no thank. He said "Oh you are going to roll the dice on this one?" then he asked me what my reasoning was, after that he didn't push anything else on me, so I appreciated the process.
