So, because all that is needed to unlock the car is for the key fob to be within a short distance, does this mean that even if I am in my car that someone could just come up to my door and open it even though im inside? Just wondering because I'll be driving halfway across the country in a few weeks and might pull over to catch some shuteye every now and then. Wanting to make sure someone wont be able to just open my door while im inside snoozing.
The key needs to be on the outside of the door to unlock it from the outside. If you want to be extra careful, put the key in your right pocket (the side that's towards the centre of the car). i'm thinking that if it's in the left pocket and you lean against the door while sleeping or roll close to it, it might mistake it for being outside. It's a slim chance but putting the key in the middle of the car reduces the chances since it'll be detected by the interior receivers.
You can have the “smart” feature turned off by the dealer. The fobs will then work ONLY via the buttons only like a “normal” keyless entry system.
You can temporary disable the key from being a smart key by pressing unlock twice while holding the lock button. The red light will flash four times if successful. It will stay disabled until you press any button on the key. Putting it in a metal container like an empty tin of mints could also work.
To further @bisco’s reply, yes they all have keyless entry but the button below the steering column is tied to the Smart Key System which was optional.
Even simpler. Get an RFID key fob blocking pouch or just cover the fob with aluminum foil. Lock the doors wit the switch on the door arm rest.
Lol. I saw 2004. And that was reinforced with the “button under the steering column” which was the SKS OFF button.
