Kia announced today that it has been hard at work on wireless fast-charging technology for the past three years. The project is a joint effort with Mojo Mobility and the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. It relied on a fleet of Soul EVs, currently the only electric car the Korean manufacturer has on sale. Kia's wireless charging solution provides more than 10 kilowatts of power to a vehicle with a grid-to-vehicle efficiency rate of 85 percent. The system is similar to wireless phone charging. There is no current plan to bring its system to production for consumers, but Kia hasn't ruled out doing something similar in the future. i don't see the point of wasting electrons for a very small convenience. honestly, wireless phone charging seems ridiculous to me. i wonder what it adds up to in cumulative losses.
Little for a phone or toothbrush, but much more for a car. Until a universal standard is settled on, we won't be seeing much wireless car charging soon.
i'm happy to see them working on it, someday, they may be able to significantly decrease the losses, idk. multi ply the number of phones in the world times the losses, might be significant.
