My boyfriend and I own a 2012 Prius we are the 3rd owners it has 166,000 miles on it. He is currently cleaning the intake manifold, as well as egr pipe which to our knowledge has never been cleaned before. He noticed a couple things were concerned about I am adding pictures so any advice would we much appreciated Picture 1. Overall picture of driver-side engine bay just right of the egr pipe. It’s indented on both sides at the 90° elbow and we’re concerned about coolant flow and resistance. Picture 2. Close up of the kink in 90° elbow and discoloration at junction. Picture 3. Is there supposed to be a sensor here that maybe got burned off or just a bunch of carbon build up and is that normal? Picture 4. This hose is bulging and bloated, should we be concerned about that? Everything looks factory normal maybe get you some super clean spray off the engine real good blast off that grease off where you think the sensor goes That's not what happens there I don't believe and don't worry about coolant flow and kinks and hoses and metal pipes all of that looks just fine even the hoses are fine everything should be better than hunky Dory. Let it rip.
I think that pipe is supposed to be shaped that way. The hoses don't look like they are about to fail, they just look like normal 10-15 year old hoses. Not sure about the sensor, is that the vent for the transmission maybe? Follow up question, is there a problem with your car you are trying to troubleshoot?
Yes in the last month or 2 it’s become real sluggish and after accelerating kinda hard sometimes a burning smell comes into the cab so we thought ok it’s time to clean the egr and manifold but today while driving it feels really hot and fast and more sluggish. My boyfriend thinks the radiator maybe dry but would he have to take the bumper off to check it?
You guys need to take it to a mechanic if it breaks. Maybe sooner. If the radiator was "dry" then the car would have overheated by now. And you can check it by taking the cap off the coolant reservoir.
Yeah there's no dry radiators in a Prius generally as you feel the Prius it starts to fill up the hosing and fill up the radiator you know there are two radiators on the Prius on top of each other basically but this is not important here I would say you need to get to some people that have a general idea of how this system works not necessarily Prius people but people that are somewhat in the know of these types of vehicles and have some things checked because just guessing and all of this and taking things apart becomes very time-consuming people have to remember how they took the things apart so they can put them back together this can lead to real problematic things this is not like working on your CPU of your gaming system at the house even if it's water cooled or liquid cooled but not like watching Rich rebuilds videos.
No, you only have to look at the level of pink coolant in the large translucent plastic reservoir over near the right fender. Normal level is near the welded seam, about halfway up. If you don't see pink (or kinda off-pink if it's dirty), then coolant is low----a potentially serious problem. If you look more carefully at those "kinks," you'll see that they're metal pipes, which obviously have to be smaller in diameter than the exterior of the thick rubber hoses that fit over them.
