Hard to say ... that does sound kind of funny to me, but then again I'm usually not listening to my engine in such close proximity, with the cowl off, with a phone mic.
Can't tell, but what struck me was how everything (nuts, hose clamps, etc) is very rusty. My bolts, nuts, and hose clamps are all silver and mostly rust free. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Here's a picture of my 2011 with 125k miles, same general area minus the EGR tube. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
This car's seen a lot of Winter use and that was priced in when I bought it. One reason I like Toyota is that they are really good about corrosion protection where it counts. Looking at this, you would suspect that getting the EGR cooler off at the exhaust end might have been troublesome, but all the fasteners came right out and were perfectly reusable. It's a beginner car for my daughter.
Apologies for prolonging the topic drift: My knee-jerk reaction would be road salt, which certainly is a factor. But the engine bay is pretty sheltered; I think a steady diet of outdoor parking is a factor too. If you're outdoor parked around here, at least 6 months out of the year the car'll be dew-coated every morning. We're southwest coast of BC in Canada, mild/wet winters, moderate road salt, and almost always garage stored. Only 93K kms too:
