Greetings all, This is my FIRST post! I do not yet have my Priuis, but I am very close. Thank you all for you informative posts. I am reading every night and learning a lot. This Lifetime Limited Power-train Warranty is provided by Scott Clark's Toyota City at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE to the vehicle Purchaser. As I mentioned, the other dealers in the area do not offer this. It seems to be nationwide, BUT you have to provide proof of all maintenance done, with paperwork. What I want to know, if this is so valuable that I should seriously consider this dealership. I would ordinarily purchase an extended warranty, but does this take care of it for free? This is only my first question - I have others. thanks, sandy
Gosh, this just sounds like snake oil. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, especially when it comes to a car dealership. This does not address hybrid related components, such as the HV battery. Hybrid components are specifically NOT covered as part of the power train. They usually have their own warranty and/or are part of the emissions warranty. Emissions equipment is also not covered apparently (o2 sensors, catalytic converter). If you are looking for a used Prius, you can do very well by looking for a private seller. There are a very small number of quirky problems for which you can find solutions for on this website. The hybrid battery was over-engineered for the car and should last it's lifetime; if not, ReInvolt in NC can help you out for far less than the cost of a new one. You don't need to spend extra for certified pre-owned or this lifetime limited powertrain warranty thing either. Go to dealerships to take a few different cars on test drives, so you know what to expect when you find an individual with one that is priced to sell.
Hi Sandy, Suppose you buy this Prius, drive outside your local area, and the engine has a warranted problem so that the car no longer can be driven. What happens now? Who will fix the car? How will they be paid? What do you have to do to exercise your rights under this warranty, besides having to pay the first $100? Since the warranty text that you provided above is silent regarding those questions, I suggest that you make sufficient inquiries so that you can assure yourself that this warranty is real. Good luck.
Thank you both for your responses. I should have said that I am going to buy a new Prius and the warranty is for both new and cerrtified. Also, the Where you are Covered clause says it is nationwide. they told me that you have to pay for the repair and then submit the paperwork for reimbursment. Is this similar to an extended warranty that I might buy for @$1000 or so? Does an extended warranty cover the HV battery and hybrid components? If not, which type of warranty, if any, does? Thanks! sandy
Just get an extended warranty here from Troy that basically covers the WHOLE car with a few exceptions. It cost a little less than $1000 and goes up to 125k mi. Then you have no worries.
So, I guess what folks are saying is that it may not be worth it to go to this particular dealeship just to get the free warranty. I have 2-3 dealerships to choose from, and wanted to know if all things were equal should I get this free warranty. Of course, this includes a big assumption, that all three will be equal and competitive. Pehaps this dealership hides this cost somewhere in its overall pricing structure. I am new, so please help me find the warranty you mention. Hybrid batteries and all included? All electrical components? Do many folks buy an exteded warranty for the Prius, or is the Prius so well made that it seldom breaks down and it is not worth it? thanks sandy
I am new to this site and just purchased my new 2010 Prius. I bought a 8yr/125,000 extended warranty for $1999 which I see from posts that it is way too much. I'm going to cancel it and purchase the extended warranty from Troy. However I can't find how/where to locate Troy. Please help. Thank you.
Reliability on Gen III (2010+) is hard to establish. Gen II (2004-2009) has been very good, subject to a few problems: HID headlights, inverter cooling pumps. Only Gen I (2001-2003) has a problem with hybrid battery failure. The hybrid components warranty is 8 years/100,000 miles, but the hybrid battery is good for 150,000 miles if you live in California or one of the 11 other states that have adopted California emission standards. Extended warranty sales at dealerships are almost pure profit. You can expect that a lifetime limited powertrain warranty is built into the purchase price as well. Third party extended warranties, aka mechanical breakdown insurance, are the way to go IF you are worried. But by far, your best bet is to put your money into proper maintenance, with regular oil changes and an early transaxle fluid change. You can save even more money by finding a competent independent mechanic to do your maintenance as opposed to the dealership service department.
Thanks for your advice. I will keep reading and hope to make a Prius purchase at the end of the month! sandy
And, if you are borrowing money to buy the car, it will pay you back far more to forget about any extended warranty and instead increase the down payment.
I was once offered such a "free" lifetime warranty from toyota dealership on a different toyota. The catch was performing all the maintnance items by the dealer. That meant the $$$ "services" (mostly checks) every 15,000 miles forever in addition to $$ "services" (mostly oil changes) every 5000 miles. I was not interested.
That is probably the "catch" in this offering. They say that "all maintenance" must be done, and the "warranty" is applicable everywhere. But I am sure that there might be some sort of requirement that you go to a Toyota dealership. Or perhaps that you complete each and every one of the suggested maintenance checks. Do folks here do everyone of these checks, or just the major ones? TIA sandy
On the 2006 I rotated the tires twice. I don't plan on rotating the tires on the 2010. I'm not going to pay someone just to check a bunch of stuff. You can check your own air filters & change them yourself.
