No, it's from the side of the actual seat. If you buy seat covers, they'll have side splits to allow the airbag to deploy. I'm not sure if this is a Prius, but this is the general idea: The Gen 4 - but not very easy to see - from TOYOTA UK website AND - this is a Gen 3
Yes, they protect the torso and shoulder. It's the curtain airbags which protect the head in conjunction with the front airbags. The Prius Manual doesn't have a good illustration, but this is my previous car - there was a tag on the seat to mark where it was centred., but the Prius seat doesn't: Below are a couple of illustrations of a FORD side impact - you can see the 2 different AIRBAGS - the small one near the patient's arm, the large curtain one near his head.
