Are there any quality tires like this? I'm thinking of getting new wheels but we put on a lot of miles on the Prius. I would like some low profile tires too but not at the expense of a much lower tread rating. We've had out Prius for 2.5 months and already have 7,456 miles on it. Anyone have recommendations on wheels/tires combos for high mileage driving? I'd also prefer same or lower weight as well. Thanks! iPhone ?
What wheels are you looking to get? Are you keeping the 15s and switching to low profiles or are you upsizing?
There's even a new low rolling resistance 17" tires, Bridgestone Ecopia EP100 (treadwear 400) in the 215/45R17 size. No idea how good it is though.
I'd look for a low rolling resistance tire if you can. You're going to take a hit in MPG if you don't and the added expense in lost MPG AND the larger low profile tire will add up quick. Check TireRack.com and enter the tire size you are interested in. You can choose to show only LRR tires if you car about that. Keep in mind that they regularly run $70 rebate specials on Bridgestone and Michelin. Costo offers the same rebate.
There is a new Hankook tire that goes for $118 (215/45/17). At that price it may work out economically to be better than the Ecopia. I wonder what the MPG difference is between them....
I'll second tirerack.com. Amazing selection, lowest prices--and great site, where you can search for tires in the size you want, with various ratings, etc.
I am running Continental ExtremeContact DSW's which are a high performance All-Season tire. The DSW stands for Dry, Wet, And Snow believe it or not. These tires have a 50,000 mile tread life warranty. They are a touch noisier than my factory Toyo's I had on my factory 17's, but these are a 225/35/19. So yes you can find high mileage low profile tires. Just depends on what you needs and requirements are.
Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll check up on tirerack. I've been so busy and haven't had any spare time. I will definitely look into LRR tires. I know I'll lose some mpg if I step up in wheel size. My main concern is reliability and tire wear. At the rate we're driving, we may have around 84k miles at the twelve month mark and that's not including any family trips we may go on. iPhone ?
84,000 miles in 12 months ??? Not by my calculations .... I get about 34,000 miles in 12 months ..... REV
Whoops you're right lol. For some reason I multiplied by 12 instead of 6. So around 42,000 miles...and we are driving to Vegas at the end of May. One way trip is around 580 miles :/ iPhone ?
You're still a little high but no big deal ! 7500 miles in 2.5 months is 3000 per month, times 12 is 36K, plus whatever else you do, so maybe with your extra trips it would be that high. That's a lotta miles ... you got the right car !! Great luck with it ! REV
