Although Torque Pro appears to work, my MAINT REQD light stays lit in yellow during normal driving, and scans show no faults. Airbag light also stays lit in red.

    Wondering how to proceed.

Maintenance required light is not indicating a fault. It just reminds you to change to do maintenance. You can reset it yourself: how to reset engine maintenance light - 2006 Toyota Prius

Maybe you just need a better scan tool to check the airbag fault. Techstream is best for a Prius. Mini-VCI is a cheap way to get it.

I strongly suspect you can get airbag codes by jumpering Tc to CG and counting blinks of the airbag light. I've never tried it on a Gen 2, but it works in Gen 1 and in Gen 3, so I don't know why it wouldn't in Gen 2.

2005 Prius base model.......the maintenance warning light is used only for informing you when oil changes. It should be reset after each oil change. It starts flashing/blinking when you have 4500 miles since last reset. It turns solid at 5000 miles. Change the oil, then reset the light. Good to go again.

AND.....the "airbag" light you are seeing is, I think, just an indicator that the passenger side airbag is disabled because there is no passenger in the seat. It really indicates a problem only if there IS a passenger in the seat; one that weighs over a certain number of pounds....maybe 20 ??

Sounds to me like an owners manual should be on your "shopping list".

Google "Toyota Tech Info", and usually the first result is what you need. Owner's Manuals in pdf format are available for download there. Note, of late the site is problematic with FireFox, Internet Explorer works fine though.

I agree with what's been said above, that there's llikely nothing wrong, it's just the US model alerting you to the need for maintenance. There's explanation in the Owner's Manual on how to dismiss it. And further, the airbag warning likely is due to presence/absence of someone in front passenger seat: again, check Owner's Manual.

On the aforementioned site, you can also download the Warranty and Maintenance Booklet, which outlines the required maintenance.

No, the red SRS Warning Light means there is something wrong. As the Owner’s Manual (PDF) for the 2005 Prius explains on page 122:

If either of the following conditions occurs, this indicates a malfunction somewhere in the parts monitored by the warning light system. Contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible to service the vehicle.
    • The light does not come on when the “IG−ON” mode is enabled or remains on for more than 6 seconds.
    • The light comes on while driving.
On vehicles that have an indicator for the passenger airbag status, it is required by regulations (FMVSS No. 208, S19.2.2(a)) to be yellow, to avoid confusion with the warning light.

@ChapmanF's suggestion about TC-to-CG is valid for the second-generation Prius, at least according to the Repair Manual.

    Good catch.
    Details are important.
Likely that at least some of the air bags are not functional.
I would think that codes should be present.......if read with the proper tool.

+1 for the proper tool. Can order the official one, if there's no skinny wire handy. :)

Not quite what I had in mind.
A proper ODB reader will be much easier to use.......and might show some codes that the "manual" method won't.

Certainly you can get additional information using a Prius-capable scan tool (OBD, by the way ... "on board diagnostics"):

    • There are some cases where a few different 5-character DTCs get grouped under the same 2-digit blink code (but not all that many cases, as it turns out)
    • The scan tool can retrieve freeze frame information and live data.

    By the same token:

    • Not everyone has a Prius-capable scan tool.
    • When we do, it's not always nearby.
    • Newcomers who post on PriusChat because their car has a problem right now do not always have one, and can be in different circumstances regarding how easily they can get one quickly, or even get to someone who has one.
    • There's even another situation, pretty common around here: often they've already bought one, not knowing it needed to be Prius capable, and are posting because it didn't give them useful information; then they get the bad-news combo that (a) they can't use the thing they just bought and (b) have to go shop for another thing.
    • For many problem areas—brakes certainly qualify—it might not be the best idea to avoid getting the diagnostic info you can already get, just to wait for the spiffy gizmo that can get you more, when in many cases the info you can get right now will be enough to find the problem.

I use my scan tool when it's nearby, but a skinny wire takes up, like, no space in the glove box.

Thanks to all who weighed in. Now oil is changed. I reset light and will soon have manual.

    Airbag system diagnosis next.

Seems to show battery banks. One of my key concerns. Also has so many available parameters I wonder what it skips - if it misses any.

Airbag light may be bad clock spring in steering wheel. Do all the buttons and horn work on the steering wheel.

Is this car new to you and is it a salvage title car? And how many miles?

I think the diag your showing is just a general obd. You need a VXDIAG With techstream
for your car. Must have TIS software or will not show hybrid battery info. Amazon $99.

Your out of gas. Your on 1 pip which is notoriously inaccurate. Dont run out of gas in a Prius it can be very $$$.

It's easy to get the airbag system trouble codes, eliminating the need to guess at the problem. If there is any question about the scan tool being used, the airbag codes can be read without it, eliminating any uncertainty about the tool from the overall picture.

Is there such a thing as a DXDIAG? I have heard of the VCX VxDiag Nano, which is one of the J2534 dongles reported to work with Techstream.
