I took my 2013 Prius C in to my local station for inspection a while back with the maintenance required message in the display. They found no problems but the message has remained for months. Do I have to take it to the dealer? Money is pretty tight right now and I drive less than 5000 miles a year, so I'm exempt from emission inspections. What could have triggered the message? What would you recommend doing?

Someone didn't reset the maintenance minder on your last service. There's some sort of "chicken-dance" you need to do to reset it. Refer to your OM. Make sure you set your trip meter to the main odometer setting. That's the first thing the instructions tells you to do; but I forgot to do that once and couldn't clear it. Spent a few hours banging my head against a wall; till I figured it out.

    Good Luck......

Note: When you do this; your next "Maintenance Due" reminder will trip 4.5K miles from the mileage you are currently at. To get everything back onto sync; just make sure they reset it on the next service. The reminder will pop up 500 miles before it's actually due. If you continue to ignore it, (beyond the 5K interval); the message will remain until the car starts moving or you manually acknowledge and cancel the message, but it will persist every time you start the car - until someone does the 'chicken-dance' to satisfy the computer overlord.

Step 1 for ours is to set the combination meter to TRIP A.

I couldn't say what the dance steps are for a 2013, could be different from both yours and ours.

...so definitely read the owners manual. The procedure is in there, it isn't meant to be a secret.

In my owners' manual, the dance steps aren't so easy to find by searching for "maintenance required" or the like.

I find them under the heading "After changing the engine oil (U.S.A. only)".

On my old 2012 Prius C, I'm pretty sure it needed to be on the main odometer screen. I remember this because I always ran on Trip A, for fuel consumption and average mpg per tank. I still do that on my Prime; though that one is a lot easier to reset. That was the mistake I made that caused the two hour head banging. I actually wrote out the procedure in the notes section of my maintenance book; so I wouldn't do that again.
If that's what you need to do for a 2013; so be it.

I think he failed to mention it, but the button your pushing is the trip button. It's two presses, the third is press and hold - the count-down timer should display, if you did it correctly. If you release the trip button before it counts down to zero - It WON'T reset, if I recall correctly.

    Hope this helps.....

The maintenance required warning is a simple odometer counter. FWIW, in Canada we don’t have this, but somehow manage to maintain our cars anyway. ;)

    More importantly: what needs doing?

Being in the States, the maintenance schedule is spelled out (in mind-numbing event-by-event format) in the Toyota USA publication Warranty and Maintenance Booklet. If it’s missing a pdf version can be downloaded from Toyota Tech Info.

    Couple of questions:

    What is “my local station”?

what’s the miles on the odometer?

attached is a table format summary of the 3rd Gen Prius maintenance schedule, as spec’d by Toyota USA. Granted a different car, but likely very close, if not identical. There’s MS Excel and PDF formats, both 120k mile limited (per Toyota USA), and extrapolated to 240k miles.

If you’re completely in the dark regarding this car’s previous maintenance, I’d err on the side of caution: better to do some services twice, than not at all.

Usually it is an oil change and a distance counter, which is turned on by pressing a combination of buttons. Do you remember when you changed the oil and who did it?
On cars with modern devices, you can set different reminders, oil change, filter change, tire change, etc. But all this is read either in days or in the distance traveled and is also easily turned off by pressing a combination of buttons.
