Source: The BMW i3-REx uses a carbon fiber body on aluminum frame. It give near Tesla performance because of the light weight. But hand layup of carbon fiber is an expensive material and labor intensive. These guys could 3d print a BMW i3 body without layup cost and designed for crash worthy protection. Marry their technology with Tesla drivetrains or (ugh!) Continental and Delphi 'off the shelf' parts and ... WOW! Perhaps the news folks could mine this for an article? Bob Wilson
After sitting through the show my meter pegged a few times, I did like the new arcronym Op X for obsolescence proof, if I got that right? I think to produce a decent article, it would take a journalist that specializes in and on 3d printing as a specialty to get the fine points of the technology any where near it's present capabilities. They also do polymer molds which seemed to me to be included in the guys definition of the company Carbon as a 3d printing specialist. Just a side note here, I read somewhere that Tesla is building solid state circuitry into the body to reduce wire harness complexity among other neat features that tech brings with it.
Tesla has a patent for a combined signal and power buss that cuts the wiring length to meters from kilometers: Tesla reveals revolutionary new wiring architecture to help robots build upcoming cars like Model Y - Electrek I regret not being able to watch it live and send in my questions: Can fibers (aka., cotton, carbon fibers, or kevlar) be part of the matrix to provide additional strength and fracture resistance? Could this produce an air-less wheel-tire perhaps with an outer belt? Could this produce a wing today (i.e., largest dimensions?) Bob Wilson
