I was watching Car Business on BNN about 2 weeks ago and they were doing a show on hybrids. One guy they interviewed was talking about Vancouver Prius taxis and he said that many of their cars had over 500,000 km, and one ("car 15") had hit a million (that's 620k miles for the Americans). I would have thought there'd be a press release or something for a Prius hitting a million, but I haven't been able to turn anything up. Is this a case of hyperbole on a car show, or perhaps vice-versa, that a cab hitting a million kilometers is just ho-hum by now?
YC-15 is Andrew Grant's Taxi (or was his taxi before he went back to further his study). He was the first hybrid taxi driver when he bought a 2001 Prius back in 2000. Toyota then exchanged it for a 2003 and took the 2001 back (it had just under 400,000km then) to study the hybrid components since in those 2 years, it would've been the highest mileage Prius out there (a 1997 Prius in Japan would never see those numbers). In late 2003, he retired the '03 as his personal vehicle and bought a 2004 Prius. That's the taxi that you speak of in the news. The last I heard, it had over 500,000kms so given that it's been a few more years now, I can believe that it has hit 1,000,000 kms.
Well I'd be curious to see how the gen3 taxis are getting along. The reports from Greece aren't too promising.
