About a month ago my nav system was having a lot of problems - it would stop connecting to the satallites and the letters GPS would not appear on the screen. The system had no idea where I was. It was fine for the past 3 weeks and then yesterday got lost again on a trip from Lancaster PA to Long Island. The GPS indicator is not appearing. I don't know if this is a faulty unit issue or just poor reception of signal. It works most of the time but is not reliable. Anyone else have the same problem? I have 80000 miles on the car and am not going to be paying out a lot for repair. (Car is a 2010 Prius 4)
No issues yet. Seems like an antenna issue at first glance. (did you change anything a month ago? new window tint? something near the dashboard that could interfere?)
I did get a replacement windshield from Safelite. It is not the original Toyota brand. But there is no tint. Seems odd that it would affect reception, but it may.
I'm no expert on windshields but hopefully someone else here can help with that extra clue. All I know is that the factory windshield is further laminated ("acoustic windshield" in the brochure) for noise reduction. (I thought all windshields were laminated in the first place? maybe it's another layer). Not sure if it matters but you could always try recalibrating the GPS signal again. The instructions are in the manual.
I have tried recalibrating but I think that refers to the car position on the map. The problem is that the GPS indicator stays off for hours which indicates no GPS signal is being received. So it seems to be a problem with communication between the satellites and the receiver. I may just have to live with it and use a smart phone gps as back up.
