Munro Associates is having an open house, June 20 and for tickets: https://munrolive.com/electronics-open-house I bought my 2014 BMW i3-REx after seeing Sandy Munro on Autoline After Hours. Two years later, I bought my 2019 Tesla Model 3 after seeing his review on Autoline. My first Model 3 cross country trip was to Munro's "EV Day" in 2019. This is the engineering "E" ticket, $49. My June 19 road trip to the Open House: I plan to leave around 4 AM to get through the Nashville rush hour early. I should arrive 4-6 PM Bob Wilson
About 99% of the driving will be on Autopilot and Full Self Driving: Source: Tesla Vehicle Safety Report | Tesla The distance to the next Supercharger plus 30-40 miles. Those will typically be ~15-20 minutes including the biology break. Bob Wilson
I was wishing you well. Not casting aspersions. But since you posted this I wonder what the US average is for newish cars in the same category/price range. I wonder if driving a new and expensive car would affect the average versus the Hellcat and beaters of the world included figures.
Interesting how different two perspectives claiming to be data derived can be. Compare with the NTSB figures cited. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/06/10/tesla-autopilot-crashes-elon-musk/ I think the article is sensationalism. I'd want to know where the incidents occurred (Interstate versus urban/suburban). Autopilot versus self driving. The age of the driver and compare against similar priced cars and aged drivers. I used Toyota's version of autopilot for 50 miles up and back in a three year old Rav4 this week in the rain in medium traffic on a 70 MPH Interstate as an assist. I consider it an assist and at any off ramp it gets turned off. In any critical situation it gets turned off. Any flashing lights it gets turned off. As for controlling the car from point a to point b, no freaking way. I've seen GPS systems try to drive me into a cornfield 5 miles away from my intended destination at a restaurant that had been there for 10+ years. Happens maybe every 6 months. As for radar versus camera data, the only crash I've had in the last 30 years was in a situation where I was blinded by the angle of the sun being directly into my eyes and didn't pick out the red brake lights on the back of a red truck that was stopped. I imagine a camera only system would not have helped. Radar might have. It was a 2001 car so had no assists.
Thank you! I stopped reading at the graph lacking a Y axis scale. Sounds like a Freedom of Information to NHTSA is needed. Bob Wilson
Trip up, $53 Supercharger fees, 725 mi, 15 hours. Some hamburgers and dog walks. Two nights at a nice motel with free breakfasts and charging. All for a couple of hours at the Open House. But I’m still pumped. Nobody lives forever, neither me nor anyone else. So enjoy their company while you can. Per new retail price, I bought two cars based on Sandy’s reviews: 2014 BMW i3-REx and 2019 Tesla Model 3. They have been my best cars since my old 1966 VW MicroBus. Bob Wilson
I had to take a nap when I got back. Left at 12 midnight (EDT) and arrived home 13.5 hours later, 711 miles, 161 kWh, and 227 Wh/mi. Supercharger cost $58.53. Perfect trip charging profile: Superchargering on the way up, motel free charging at destination, and Supercharging on the way back. Slight difference on the trip up and back. On the way up, I took a West side approach to bypass downtown Detroit and Toledo at maximum, evening rush hour. Full Self Driving really tamed the area driving and traffic habits. Regardless, leaving at local 1 AM, the car navigated a faster and ~10 mile shorter route through Detroit. On the way back, I choose GOOD and FAST so it wasn't as cheap. <GRINS> Round trip: 1,525 mi, 348 kWh, at 227 Wh/mi (4.41 mi/kWh.) Spent $295 for two nights at the Comfort Inn and Suites with free charging, four ChargePoint stations. The Comfort Inn was better than three nights at the Trump International in Las Vegas. Trump International forced 'Valet parking' who staff failed over three nights to put a proper charge on my Tesla and had to be tipped in cash (bribed) to park and fetch the car. Worse, on the 17th floor I could hear voices from the street which really hurt the Trump experience. There will more pictures later but in the spirit of our beloved and respected PriusChat: This shows the level of detail Munro goes to of nearly a dozen EVs and hybrids they have analyzed. Other photos will be in a separate thread with more technical content about why I spent so much to attend a two hour, "Open House." Bob Wilson
