I have a 2008 Prius and for over 1 year have had problems with the Nav system giving incorrect directions and the screen going blank. I"ve had it to the dealership 5 times (# 6 next week) when the factory techs have looked at it - supposedly fixed it each time and each time is craps out again. I CANNOT get them to put a completely new nav system in - they say they have a process of elimination to do to fix it. I'm at the point I don;t want it fixed I want it replaced. Anyone else have Nav problems like this?
My nav gives wrong directions too sometimes. 95% of the time it's a hit, the other 5% is a miss. The Toyota/Lexus nav is not the most intuitive thing. As for screen going blank, I never experienced that. Make sure you have Freeway option turned on in settings. Also, try to input an address that gave you wrong directions last time and try it again. And maybe you can use this to show your Toyota dealership. At the very least they should give you a software update.
I can't speak to the screen going blank problems as mine has never had an issue w/that. "Incorrect directions" are also extremely rare. Care to post some example routes that are wrong? Please indicate the start and end points and what parts of it are wrong. Perhaps others here (like myself, but my map DVD is from late 2005) can try to repro it on their Priuses or their nav units that use Navteq maps, such as those from Garmin. Is the route given at http://navteq.com/ also wrong? If so, is the same as what your Prius returns? I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 w/maps a few years old and a Nuvi 1200 w/very recent maps. They use data from Navteq as does Toyota (as do many other OEM built in car nav systems). If you could record a video of your MFD blanking out along w/the (proper) button pushes you're making to revive it, perhaps the your dealer would be more inclined to replace it or troubleshoot more. Hopefully you can do this before your 3 year/36K warranty (or extended, if you have one) runs out.
The dealership was able to recreate all the issues - wrong directions and blank screen so they said it was the wiring between the unit under the seat and the screen and replaced it. But that didn't work. They it was the calibration - then it was the "brain". All the fixes work for a short time then it is capute again. I have everything marked to allow freeways, toll roads etc. I have my Magellan portable and program in the same trips and it is spot on each time. When driving North from Ventura County to Lake Tahoe along the I5 the nav kept tellilng me to get off the freeway and do a uturn. Driving from Oxnard to the 126 it was telling me to go south towards LA. I have photos on my cell phone of the blank screen but no video. I will check the navtec.com. Thanks
Last weekend I set the nav from Ventura to Santa Ynez and it took me there just fine. I had lunch and hit the "home" button for the return journey and the screen went blank. Another trip to same location it took me there just fine. On the return journey I didn't program it or hit home. I stopped and shopped half way home and when I got into the car it suddenly came on trying to guide me back to Santa Ynez.
First I've heard of this. If the screen is going blank, the first thing they should do is replace the screen - that's the first stage of the "process of elimination"! If that doesn't cure the problem, relace the DVD drive under the seat. If that doesn't work, replace the head unit. Etc, etc. Just be warned, they will replace it with a refurbished unit, not a new one.
I continue the battle but am making headway. Apparently my nav is pulling info from 2 satellites instead of 4 - sometimes its Ok and sometimes not I guess depending on which satellites? They are replacing an anetnna - have already done with wiring and the ECU so hopefully this does it. I insisted on NEW but how will I know if its refurbished!! I just want the darned thing to work.
This is a second post, the original was from a thread Dr Fusco started on the MFD. Here's what's happening to my MFD and NAVI system..... The system has "rebooted" itself for the total of three times now. Everytime it has rebooted itself, all my memory locations disappeared and the region always goes to somewhere in the mideast. I believe region 6 or 7. I'm in sunny socal, region 2. The 2nd time it rebooted, it literally said, NO NOT POWER DOWN, system rebooting. Sort of a dark threat? So, since then, about 4 months passed by, no problems until today, the system rebooted itself again. It went from my dual screen to single, it had the system oil change screen and gave me the option of saying, do not ever show this again. INTERESTING thing, is that my HOME locations, two of which was inputted, never disappeared, ONLY the places visited on my navi. Why is that? Now, being a real estate broker, I use the navigation quite a bit. So manually inputting all these addresses again is always a pain. HERE's my question..........is my system failing? is it on the way out? should i be concerned? is it just having an electrical hiccup? How worried should i be? Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance.
Update on my Nav problems. After a year of wrong directions, blank screens, 6 tries at repair, e-mails to whomever I could reach at Toyota - finally a total replacement of my nav system and new disc - same problems happened. Toyota found out that the problem was a faulty part in the XM Radio - installed by Toyota BTY. It was blocking some of the satellite connections to draw in the directions. That part replaced all seems to be working well - Finally. Thank goodness it was all still under warranty.
Irishiz congrats on finally getting your fix, I found that after Toyotas quality issues came up ... they jump on things a LOT quicker now ... this may have worked to your advantage. Our Lexus had a TSB (tech service bulleton) regarding the alignment, that Lexus never took care of ... even though the issue was complained about for years. That neglect cost us TWO sets of tires wearing out prematuerly. I called the new improved support line and BAM. It was like someone lit a fire under those people.
